Here you will find more about our Terrazzo solutions!

Terrazzo Instalation

Terrazzo is installed in stages during construction of a home or building, after the slab has cured a 5/8″ layer of terrazzo mix is applied and compressed with heavy rollers.
Once the terrazzo topping has set, the heavy grinding begins, removing the surface and exposing the marble chips.

Once the construction is complete, but before painting and instalation of cabinets, the terrazzo will be honed and polished with diamond abrasives. This will bring the terrazzo to a high gloss, making it ready for use.

We offer the possibility to create a custom design during our installations to make your floor unique.

A typical installation goes like this:

Terrazzo Restoration

Damaged or Terrazzo covered with carpet?

Once all necessary preparations are completed, which include removing carpet, cutting off carpet strip nails, patching holes, and removing tile or sheet products, the grinding and honing process can begin.

The grinding process starts with the use of  aggressive diamond tools designed to cut through wax, glue, and stains. This initial phase is then followed by a series of finer diamond abrasives, each one progressively reducing the size of the scratches untill they’re small enough to be buff out.

To minimize dust, these steps are carried out with water, with any slurry vacuumed off the floor.

Once the floor has completely dried, the terrazzo will be buffed and sealed to complete the restoration process.

Terrazzo restoration
is less expensive than vinyl, tile or carpet.

Terrazzo Maintenance

The Terrazzo we find in our homes built in the 1950’s and 60’ is calcium based marble and cement and should be treated with care.

Acid cleaners and foods: Toilet bowl cleaner, lime away and muriatic acid will etch the floor.  Mild acids like wine, citrus juice and vinegar can remove the gloss surface and require spot grinding. Immediately wipe up excess, and rinse several times with water.

Oils: Cooking oils, spray on sunscreen, body lotions, plug in air freshener will stain the floors. Soak up spills with baking soda and clean with dish soap and water. Do not wipe or scrub as you may spread the oil or scratch the floor.

Sand and abrasives: Use good sand catching door mats out side and shake them out often. Stick felt pads under furniture and dining room chairs to prevent scratches. Chairs with rollers need a pad to keep them from grinding into the floor.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Mop the floor with a minimal amount of liquid dish soap and water and rinse. Do not apply wax or other coatings on restored Terrazzo.

Coffee, food and animal stains: Clean the area with soap and water and apply a peroxide poultice. Take three layers of paper towels soaking with hydrogen peroxide and place on the stain until dry.

The recrystallized terrazzo is easily maintained and will last for many years with just a little care and periodic buffing. Before wear patterns from traffic begin to appear, we can rebuff the high-traffic areas without having to remove all the furniture.

Periotic professional buffing is not only quick, but also cost-effective. The cost for buffing is $.5o per square foot, with a minimum of $150.00.

The new robot sweepers, steam cleaners and vacuums do a great job of removing the grit and cleaning the floor prolonging the time between professional buffing.
